Beach Lifeguard

West Cornwall Adventure is running Surf Life Saving Great Britain's Beach Lifeguard Award/Surf Coach Lifesaver Award (6 day) & refresher (1 day) throughout 2012. The beach lifeguard award is the prerequisite for working as a beach lifeguard for the RNLI or local authority lifeguard service. The beach lifeguard award is also recognised by the international lifesaving federation (ILS) and accepted throughout the world by lifeguard services including those in Australia and New Zealand.

All courses are run from Portreath Surf Life Saving Club, one of the UK's best lifeguard and training facilities. On the 6 day course, the training takes place Monday to Friday and the final examination on the Saturday. The 1 day refresher is the annual proficiency and the training and assessment will take place on the same day.

The course covers five main areas:

Fitness

Lifeguard skills, knowledge and rescues

Spinal Management

Emergency Life Support

Emergency first aid

The minimum age for the course is 16 years old, all candidates must have a good level of fitness, including being able to swim 400m in under seven and half minutes and be able to run 200m in under forty seconds.

The full award is valid for 24 months and the refresher 12 months.
